Barcelona claimed a major transfer victory in the summer when they persuaded Ousmane Dembele to sign a new contract with the club after his previous deal expired – but it may not be as emphatic a success as the Catalan club might have hoped due to a clause that is installed in the deal.

Dembele has shone with the Camp Nou side in 2022, realising his potential as a world-class winger after overcoming a succession of injury problems that have plagued his career with Barcelona to date. In just 21 La Liga appearances last season, the 25-year-old produced 13 assists, which was a league-high figure.

Already this season, he has contributed two goals and four decisive passes in eight appearances across all competitions.

For the likes of Premier League giants Manchester United, Chelsea and Liverpool, who are all seeking to add to their offensive power and have been linked with Dembele in the past, he will be an enticing prospect if he can stay fit for the remainder of the season.

What is Ousmane Dembele's release clause?

This is particularly the case as L’Equipe reveal that Dembele won a concession from Barcelona to have a €50m release clause placed in his current contract and valid from the summer of 2023.

Interestingly, Barcelona will only receive 50% of the transfer fee if a club triggers this release clause. The other 50% of the money will go to Dembele and his entourage, who did not take a signing bonus when he penned his new contract in the summer.

At the time, this was seen as an effective way for Barcelona to prevent another hefty spend in what was a lavish transfer window for them. However, with Dembele, whose contract runs until 2024, in excellent form, €50m for him suddenly seems a very tempting price.

The French source reports, however, that Dembele’s target has always been to stay with Barca and simply because there is a door potentially open for him to leave next summer, it does not guarantee that he will take it.
