Ivan Toney has received his first England call-up, and a League One club are set to win big if he makes his debut against Italy or Germany in the UEFA Nations League later this month.

Toney has made a blistering start to the season for Brentford, his five goals meaning only Manchester City's Erling Haaland and Fulham's Aleksandr Mitrovic have scored more than him.

A former Newcastle prospect, Toney is uncapped at youth international level and had to battle his way up through the divisions before starring in the Premier League, though.

And one of his former employers - Peterborough United - stand to gain big from Toney's recent ascent.

Peterborough bought Toney from Newcastle for £650,000/€742,500 in 2018 before selling him onto Brentford two years later in a £10m/€11.4m deal. While that marked a significant profit, there were further add-ons.

"We've got a bonus if he spits, farts or f***ing giggles!" Peterborough Director of Football Barry Fry told the Sun.

Fry: 'brilliant with add-ons'

"We're brilliant with add-ons when we sell a player. We've got bonuses for appearances and goals etc. And I have to say Brentford are different class in paying up all the clauses, absolutely brilliant."

Fry was noncommittal when asked exactly how much a first England cap would cost Brentford, but Peterborough also have a history of including sell-on percentages, so Fry will be rubbing his hands together once again if reports of a January move to a Manchester United or Chelsea are to be believed.

"I can't believe Chelsea and Manchester United, who haven't had a centre-forward, didn’t go out and buy him for £60m or £70m in the window," Fry said.

"They are missing a proper centre-forward and had they got him, he'd have more chances and would flourish more."

Toney is currently ranked at €32m by Football Transfers' sophisticated inhouse algorithm, and has a contract at the Gtech Community Stadium which runs until 30 June 2025.
