This past summer saw spending dip across the board, with Premier League and Saudi Pro League sides slightly holding back after splashing ludicrous sums in 2023.

For the first time in a number of years, there were no €100 million-plus transfers, with the most expensive deal seeing Julian Alvarez join Atletico Madrid from Manchester City for €75m.

However, January 2025 promises to be an intriguing transfer window and multiple high-profile deals are likely to go through.

Man City want to sign a replacement for ACL victim Rodri, Chelsea are on the lookout for a top striker, while Man Utd have a new manager in Ruben Amorim, following the sacking of Erik ten Hag, and will look to strengthen their squad.

Real Madrid are still lacking a Toni Kroos replacement in midfield and need defenders after the ACL injuries to Eder Militao and Dani Carvajal.

Meanwhile, Serie A giants Juventus will sign a centre back and left-back following the ACL injuries suffered by Gleison Bremer and Juan Cabal. They may also look to buy a striker.

Below, FootballTransfers runs through the opening and closing dates of the January transfer window across Europe’s top five leagues and Saudi Arabia.
