Man City transfers: Every signing and sale for 2022-23
Manchester City were the envy of world football when they signed Erling Haaland from Borussia Dortmund for €60 million, but who else has come and gone at the Etihad this season?
Pep Guardiola's Premier League champions also sold more than usual in last summer's transfer window, and they now trail league leaders Arsenal by five points having played a game more...
Football Transfers looks at what exactly the Cityzens have done.
What players have Man City signed in 2022-23?
Player | From | Fee |
---|---|---|
Erling Haaland | Dortmund | £54m |
Kalvin Phillips | Leeds | £41.1m |
Manuel Akanji | Dortmund | £15.75m |
Sergio Gomez | Anderlecht | £11.7m |
Stefan Ortega | Bielefeld | Free |
Maximo Perrone | Bielefeld | £8m |
Haaland was also wanted by Real Madrid and Barcelona, but father Alfie and recently deceased agent Mino Raiola have managed his career carefully, and City were seen as his best next step. Twenty-five goals in 19 Premier League games later and they look to have been right.
Kalvin Phillips only cost £10m less than the Norwegian goal-fiend, the England international signed as cover for Rodri in defensive midfield, while two of Haaland's former teammates arrived in the shape of centre-back Manuel Akanji for £15.75 and left-back Sergio Gomez, who had since moved to Anderlecht, for £11.7m
Ederson remains the undisputed first-choice in goal, but the opportunity to sign Stefan Ortega - owner of a Bundesliga second-best 128 saves last season - on a free proved to good to turn down.
There was minor movement from City in the winter window, with Argentine youth international midfielder Maximo Perrone signed from Velez Sarsfield for £8m.
What players have Man City sold in 2022-23?
Player | To | Fee |
---|---|---|
Raheem Sterling | Chelsea | £50.58m |
Gabriel Jesus | Arsenal | £46.98m |
Oleksandr Zinchenko | Arsenal | £31.5m |
Pedro Porro | Sporting | £7.65m |
Ko Itakura | Gladbach | £4.5m |
Arijanet Muric | Burnley | £2.7m |
Unusually for City, they actually made more money from player sales than they spent on acquisitions last summer. Raheem Sterling commanded the highest fee - £50.6m - when he left for Chelsea in search of more regular first-team minutes.
Gabriel Jesus and Oleksander Zinchenko both also left for London, joining Arsenal for a combined £78.48m. City might live to regret letting them go - the Gunners lead them atop Premier League standings having played a game less.
From there it was fringe players who were allowed to leave, with Pedro Porro, Ko Itakura and Arijanet Muric, who were all farmed out on loan last season, finding more permanent solutions. Porro is now back in England, via Sporting Lisbon, with Tottenham Hotspur.
What players have Man City loaned in 2022-23?
Player | To | |
---|---|---|
Zack Steffen | Middlesbrough | LOAN |
Liam Delap | Stoke | LOAN |
Yangel Herrera | Girona | LOAN |
Yan Couto | Girona | LOAN |
Issa Kabore | Marseille | LOAN |
Nahuel Bustos | Sao Paulo | LOAN |
Joao Cancelo | Bayern Munich | LOAN |
Diego Rosa | Bahia | LOAN |
Nahuel Bustos | Talleres | LOAN |
With Ederson and Ortega now for competition in goal, USMNT No.1 Zack Steffen dropped down a division to join Middlesbrough on loan.
Liam Delap - son of former throw-in legend Rory - is a promising striker who has been given the chance to refine his craft at Championship side Soke City.
Defensively-minded pair Yangel Herrera and Yan Couto both left for promoted La Liga side Girona. In the case of 24-year-old Herrera, the suspicion remains that it could be his last such move.
The most headline-grabbing loan out happened in January, with Joao Cancelo joining Bayern Munich after a recent fall-out with Guardiola. The full-back's deal can be made permanent for €70m next summer.
What is Man City's net spend in 2022-23?
Man City made a net spend of -£18.36m in the 2022 summer transfer window.
