Paul Pogba would’ve avoided a pay cut at Manchester United had he stayed there this season, following the club’s failure to qualify for the Champions League in the last campaign.
The Red Devils finished sixth in the Premier League last season after a disappointing campaign where they even sacked Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and replaced him with Ralf Rangnick.

Pogba left the club upon the expiry of his contract anyways, having spent six years there, returning to Juventus, where he previously enjoyed a fruitful spell.
The start hasn’t gone as planned though, as he picked up an injury in pre-season and had to undergo surgery to fix the issue, putting his World Cup participation in doubt.

Had he stayed at Manchester United, though, he would’ve remained on his contract terms, unlike many of his team-mates, who have taken a pay cut this season.
There is a clause in the contract of several players that says they have to take a 25 percent pay cut should Manchester United fail to qualify for the Champions League.
Players such as Cristiano Ronaldo and Casemiro have this in their deals, and it was reportedly one of the reasons Ronaldo wanted to leave the club in the summer.

Casemiro only joined this season on a massive deal but should United not qualify for Europe’s top club competition, then he would be back on the terms he was on at Real Madrid.
It’s unclear whether this clause wasn’t present in Pogba’s contract, which would’ve seen him not take a pay cut in this campaign as United play in the Europa League.
Champions League football is important for Manchester United as failure to qualify for the competition even hampers the sponsorship revenue they receive, especially from shirt sponsor Adidas.
The club will be eager to return to the competition this season and have already made a positive start, sitting just three points behind the top of the table.
