A bad relationship between Thomas Tuchel and Chelsea owner Todd Boehly played an important role in the sacking of the German manager on Wednesday, according to the Daily Telegraph.

Tuchel was sensationally sacked less than 12 hours after Chelsea began their Champions League group campaign with a 1-0 defeat at Dinamo Zagreb.

It was initially believed that Chelsea’s bad start to the season – they have lost three of their last five games in all competitions – was the primary reason for Tuchel’s sacking.

However, the Telegraph reports that there has been big tension between Tuchel and Boehly all summer.

Tension between Tuchel and Boehly

Tuchel has been unhappy that Boehly gave him extra responsibilities during the summer transfer window with regards to buying, selling and negotiating for players.

The German felt that he already had too much on his plate following the Chelsea takeover.

He told Boehly he was disappointed that former technical and performance advisor Petr Cech left Stamford Bridge after the takeover.

Tuchel also revealed publicly last weekend that he was not involved in the appointment of a new sporting director.

A clear chasm began to develop between Tuchel and Boehly, which culminated in the former’s sacking.

The Athletic adds that the decision had already been made to axe Tuchel by Boehly prior to the defeat to Dinamo Zagreb. Even if Chelsea had won that game, the outcome would have been the same.

There are further reports that Tuchel’s relationship deteriorated with a number of Chelsea players, some of whom were unhappy at being left out of the team or played out of position.

Tuchel follows ex-chairman Bruce Buck, Marina Granovskaia, Cech and former head of international scouting Scott McLachlan out of the Chelsea door following the Boehly takeover.

He will remain a Chelsea legend, though, having won the club the Champions League last year.
