Christopher Nkunku: Chelsea transfer target’s value revealed

Chelsea are closing in on a transfer for RB Leipzig attacker Christopher Nkunku.
The France international has been one of 2022’s hottest properties, having shone since the beginning of last season with the Bundesliga club. Nkunku attracted all kinds of attention in the summer, but ultimately he signed a new contract that tied him to Leipzig for one further year.

The Champions League hopefuls, though, always expected him to leave in the summer of 2023, setting a €60 million release clause for the player.
Given that they slapped a price tag of over €100m on him last summer, this marks a significant drop in his price, yet no one was willing to match that figure, despite interest from all over Europe.
Now Chelsea are trying to fast-track a deal through ahead of the summer transfer window and appear to be making strong progress.

FootballTransfers calculates that he is presently worth €61m, with the margin for error giving him a top estimate of €77m.
Not only is this due to his fine on-field performances, which saw him score 35 goals and create 20 more in 52 appearances in all competitions, it is also the result of a contract that runs until 2026 and the fact that he is still relatively young and still has the potential to improve.
It is unclear exactly what Chelsea are set to pay for the player, although it is suggested it will be above Nkunku’s release fee. Their reasoning behind this is to allow the structure of the deal to be put in place early and to secure the player, with whom they have a pre-agreement on a contract.
Given the figures, though, it appears that Chelsea will be getting a fair deal for Nkunku, whose versatility in attack should dovetail nicely with Graham Potter’s flexible approach.
