Manchester City pulled off one of the bargains of the century by signing Erling Haaland for just £51 million this summer but the Norwegian’s wages make him one of the highest paid players in world football.

Haaland has begun his City career by scoring at an unprecedented level, already netting 19 times in his first 12 games in all competitions and he is seemingly being rewarded with a salary that would make him by-far the highest-paid player in the Premier League.

A report in the Daily Mail claims that Haaland’s basic salary puts him in line with City’s other high earners but a series of ‘almost-guaranteed’ bonuses sees his weekly wage reach more than £850,000 and an annual salary of at least £45m.

The specifics of the bonuses were not disclosed but will likely correlate with the amount of goals he scores and the Norway international is on course to shatter both Premier League and European records while picking up his eyewatering pay check.

City were willing to make Haaland one of the highest-paid players in the world, with Paris Saint-Germain forward Kylian Mbappe reportedly earning a similar amount after renewing his contract this summer.

Haaland became the first player to net three successive home hat-tricks in the Premier League and his 14 goals in eight domestic games gives him a projected, albeit unlikely, total of 67 goals for the season.

Haaland City's saviour...but for how long?

While Haaland has a host of financial bonuses in his contract, one thing he allegedly does not have is a release clause specific to Real Madrid, with manager Pep Guardiola rubbishing reports already linking the 22-year-old with an exit.

However, Haaland is believed to have a general release clause in his contract of around £200m in 2024, with it decreasing over time, and reports have suggested that City are already considering offering their star striker a new deal to remove it.

Haaland’s father, former City midfielder Alf-Inge, claimed in a documentary surrounding his son that Erling is looking to dominate multiple European leagues and could only stay at City for up to four years.

Alf-Inge said: "I think that Erling wants to test out his capabilities in every league. Then he can stay in every league for three to four years maximum."

In further comments, he joked: "He could have two and a half years in Germany, two and a half in England and then [the same] in Spain, Italy and France, right? We do not know if it will be like that, but I think he would like to test his abilities in the big leagues."
