Maguire's Man Utd future in doubt as Ten Hag makes captaincy call
Harry Maguire hasn’t had a great start to the season with Manchester United and there could be further problems for him in the coming months.
The defender struggled for form at the start of the season, then was dropped for the partnership of Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane and has struggled with injury since.
He hasn’t played for the club for a month, and there have been questions over his continued selection for the English national team ahead of the World Cup.

Now, there may be doubts over his captaincy in the future as he’s missed out in recent weeks, with Bruno Fernandes assuming the leadership in his absence, which may become a permanent thing.
Fernandes could assume captaincy permanently
One Manchester United icon believes that Maguire is no longer the captain, and that Fernandes has taken on the responsibility permanently.
Speaking to Lord Ping, Dwight Yorke said about the situation: “Before he [Fernandes] was the stand-in captain, which wasn’t a problem.

“I think with the Maguire scenario, looking from the outside in at the club without knowing all the details, I think he's been told he's going to be the captain going forward.
“When a manager tells you something like that, then that weight comes off. So now he's thinking, ‘Right, this is my new role’. That clarity is good for the team and enables him to go out and do what he needs to do.

“Obviously, I wouldn’t expect this to be an official announcement this season with Maguire at the club, but perhaps the manager has had a word with him and that has given him the confidence he needed as a player.”
It’s still unclear whether when Maguire will return to the Manchester United squad, and his future at the club is uncertain, but Varane’s latest injury would mean he’ll be given more of a chance soon.
