Liverpool have been eyeing up options to improve their midfield, having seen their side struggle in that department in recent weeks.

The Reds had a difficult start to the campaign and a large reason for that has been their problems in midfield, which have been due to injuries and lack of form.

As a result, they identified a host of players, and one of them is Benfica’s Florentino Luis, who is an emerging youngster at the club.

However, one former Benfica figure has doubts over his current style and there could be problems if he moves to the Premier League in the near future.

Liverpool warned about potential signing

“He needs to be stronger in the air and more aggressive in duels,” the former Benfica full-back Pedro Henriques told Bancada. “Florentino Luis was always a player of great quality, but with little intensity in his game.

“Being a good player is not enough. You need to get to a level where you either have something else or you’re eaten alive. And he was being ‘eaten’ very easily.

“(Florentino) has worked hard and there is an improvement. He has corrected the deficiencies he had and improved. But he is not yet ready. He needs more.

“If he wants to play in England in his position, he has to be strong in the air, strong in duels. He is getting better and needs to improve even more.”

Luis currently plays for the U-21s with Portugal and has a deal with the club until 2027, with a release clause valued at £104 million.

Liverpool have been working with the Portuguese more market recently, signing Luis Diaz from Porto and Darwin Nunez from Benfica in the last year.

Benfica have been known to make big sales in recent years and it seems almost certain that Luis will be their next one having developed him well.
