Ronaldo, De Gea among 10 Man Utd players out of contract in 2023
Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag may not publicly admit it, but contract renewals are on his mind.
Ten Hag is presently overseeing a renovation process at Old Trafford that is set to take time, particularly as the club failed to make the ground in the summer transfer window that he might have liked.
Releasing players at the end of their contract, though, is an easy way to get rid of the deadwood at the club, and the Man Utd boss no doubt already has a strong idea of who he will keep next summer and who he will get rid of. Not that he is saying so, of course.
“In this moment we only think about performing,” he claimed. “We have a lot of games to go, so I don’t want to get that distracted by talks.
“We have to focus on football, on performances, not on negotiating, that’s what we are doing now.
“Some players get motivated when you play for a contract. But it is not the way why we handle it like this. We want to restore Man United, we want to develop the squad, develop the team and bring everything to a better level.
“We work on that way of play, also on the culture and we need, of course, quality players who are highly motivated.”

Three players are presently dominating the narrative: Cristiano Ronaldo, David de Gea and Diogo Dalot.
Each is important for different reasons. Ronaldo is one of the greatest players in the history of the game but is clearly finding it difficult to win Ten Hag over and has only scored once this season. De Gea, meanwhile, has split opinion since arriving at Old Trafford in 2011 while Dalot is a transfer target for Barcelona.

The list of players out of contract at the end of the season is significantly more extensive, however, and also includes England internationals Luke Shaw, Phil Jones and Marcus Rashford as well as Brazil international Fred.
With so many players out of contract, the Ten Hag revolution at Man Utd could really get underway next summer, when the boards can be swept clear.
