Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag is ready to ward off Barcelona's interest in Diogo Dalot by extending the full-back's contract at Old Trafford.

Dalot arrived at United from Porto in 2018 but had struggled to carve out a regular spot in the club's starting line-up.

Under Ten Hag, however, the Portugal international has become a key player.

The Dutchman started Dalot as his first-choice right-back over Aaron Wan Bissaka at the start of the 2022-23 season and he looks set to stay in that role after injury ruled the ex-Crystal Palace star out of circulation.

Ten Hag is not the only individual to value the defender's talents, with Barcelona reportedly interested in a move.

But according to ESPN the manager is moving to secure his future, as United plan to activate an extension in his contract which will keep him tied to Old Trafford until June 2024 and thus unavailable on a free transfer next summer.

Speaking over the summer, Dalot had high praise for Ten Hag and his work on the training pitch.

“It’s very good. I really like the dynamic that he shows, not just in training but in general," he said.

"Very demanding, pays a lot of attention to detail, which is good, and small details that that can make a difference in the long perspective.

"We want to build a team together with players, together with staff, build something very good inside in between us and then do our job on the pitch and win games.”
