PSV want to sell Man Utd transfer target Gakpo to Liverpool

Cody Gakpo is Manchester United's top transfer target in the upcoming winter transfer window, but his current employers PSV Eindhoven are keen to do business with Liverpool…

United could have signed Gakpo in the summer - the player himself thought it was all but a done deal - but they instead got embroiled in negotiations with Ajax for Brazil winger Antony, whom they ultimately paid €100 million for, and the Gakpo deal collapsed.

Gakpo has got his head down since and plundered 13 goals and 17 assists from just 24 games in the first half of the season with PSV, and he has now scored twice in two World Cup matches with the Netherlands - something that has driven his price up further.

And now PSV seem content to invite a bidding war, with their sporting director Marcel Brands talking up United's great rivals Liverpool as a potential destination for the talented 23-year-old.

"Liverpool is a club that is always very focused," he said. "Sometimes they get players for the next season in November. Would they be a good partner to send Gakpo in the summer? Yes, that's right."

Apart from Gakpo's incredible attacking output, Liverpool's interest in the Dutchman makes sense from a tactical perspective. Able to line up across the frontline but happiest cutting inside from the left flank, he could perfectly plug the gap left by Sadio Mane, who left for Bayern Munich for €41m in the summer.

United also have a hole in their attack following Cristiano Ronaldo's release hot on the heels of a scathing interview he gave Piers Morgan on the eve of the World Cup.

Gakpo is currently rated at €28.5m by Football Transfers' in-house algorithm, but PSV have reportedly doubled his asking price with his performances in Qatar playing into their hands as they attempt to pull away from financial trouble.
