Son has been spectacular at Tottenham, scoring 136 goals in 344 matches for them since signing and his potential was recognised early on by Klopp.

Klopp’s regret comes from his time at Borussia Dortmund, when he had the chance to sign the South Korean star, while he was an emerging prospect at Hamburg.

The German boss has now spoken about the regret he has over failing to secure his signing and described it as one of the great mistakes of his career.

Klopp reveals Son regret

Speaking to South Korean media, Klopp said: "One of the big mistakes in my life was that I didn't sign him. Outstanding player. World class player and one of the best strikers in the world. Yeah, you should be proud."

Son himself commented on the decision to reject Borussia Dortmund for Bayer Leverkusen in 2013 when he started garnering attention for his talents.

"I wanted to stay in the Bundesliga. Leverkusen and Dortmund wanted me. Both teams play in the Champions League but I thought Dortmund would use rotation more than Leverkusen.

He then admitted it was a decision made over how much game time he thought he would get: "That's why I chose Leverkusen over Dortmund. It's really important to play regularly at my age."

Son has been linked with a move away from Tottenham in recent times and Klopp could rectify an error of old if he’s able to bring the South Korean over to Anfield soon.

It’s believed the Reds are monitoring the situation as they hope to improve their attacking line in the coming transfer windows and he’s one of the targets.

Regardless, it’s easy to see why Klopp sees this as an error on his part and it’ll be something he wishes to fix if given the chance.
