Wayne Rooney provided a sly response to Cristiano Ronaldo after the latter’s comments this week in his explosive interview with Piers Morgan.

Ronaldo discussed his relationship with Rooney earlier in the week in his interview with Morgan saying the Englishman “wasn’t a friend.”

This comes after Rooney said Ronaldo wasn’t the same player any more and that age had caught up to him after a tough start to the season for the Portuguese star at Manchester United.

Now, Rooney has seemingly hit back when he was working on a television broadcast ahead of the World Cup opener between hosts Qatar and Ecuador.

Ronaldo’s comments in the week included suggesting Rooney was jealous of his career given he retired earlier than him and that he was still playing at a high level.

Ronaldo said to Morgan: “I don’t know why he criticizes me so badly. Probably because he finished his career and I’m still playing at a high level. I’m not going to say I’m better looking than him. Which is true.”

Now, Rooney was asked who he would start, bench or sell between Lionel Messi, Ronaldo and Harry Kane, to which he had a bit of a surprising response and seemingly took a dig at his former team-mate.

He had to confirm whether it would be on current form, to which he said: “I’d have to start Messi. I’d bench Kane and leave Ronaldo out… he’s not playing for his club.”

Ronaldo’s future at Manchester United is almost non-existent after his interview this last week given he criticized the structure of the club and said manager Erik ten Hag has constantly disrespected him.

It’s believed Manchester United are looking at ways they can terminate his contract and it’s unlikely he’s going to play for them after the World Cup is over.
