Liverpool face fresh challenge in their pursuit of World Cup star
Liverpool’s ambition of bringing Enzo Fernandez to Anfield will be tested with recent reports suggesting that Paris Saint-Germain are hoping to sign the World Cup winner.
The midfielder, who recently put in a stellar performance in Qatar to see his nation claim the trophy, has been linked to a series of huge clubs.
Most notably, Liverpool, who are in dire need of a first-team central-midfielder.
The Reds’ interest in Borussia Dortmund’s Jude Bellingham is football’s worst-kept secret - but outlets have also linked them to Benfica’s Fernandez.
However now, according to RMC, PSG are reportedly hot in pursuit of the FIFA World Cup Young Player award winner and have him on their radar.
The Parisian club’s selection of midfielders is already brimming with star names - but they have the ambition to bring some more depth to their ranks.
Indeed, the Ligue 1 champions have brought in some really strong midfielders over the last couple of years, but the club is always looking to find depth to strengthen each position.
Various reports have also linked the likes of Real Madrid, Barcelona, Atletico Madrid, Manchester City, Manchester United, Tottenham, Chelsea, Arsenal and Inter to the youngster, who looks set to leave his current side soon.
The 21-year-old in 24 appearances for Benfica has three goals and five assists in all competitions. His current club have a good relationship with Liverpool following Darwin Nunez’s move to Merseyside over the summer.
It’s believed that Fernandez has a release clause of €120million - while Benfica only bought him from River Plate last summer and so a deal in the winter window would appear to be hugely unlikely.
The maestro is often used as a deep-lying playmaker but has also been used in a more advanced role as an attacking midfielder.
