Manchester United are closing in on the signing of Cody Gakpo, as PSV boss Ruud van Nistelrooy accepts his fate.

United have been targeting Gakpo since the summer, where they turned to former Ajax star Antony instead.

But the Red Devils are back in for the in-form forward, who has an incredible nine goals and 12 assists in 14 Eredivisie games.

Former Man Utd star Van Nistelrooy won't want to lose his main man in the middle of a title race.

But he accepts that a team such as PSV can't turn down offers like the one they are set to receive.

"There comes a time when you can't say no anymore," he told Dutch outlet Voetbal International.

Gakpo's asking price

PSV chief executive Marcel Brands recently stated that the club are looking for a record sale on Gakpo.

Their existing record is the €45 million of Mexico star Hirving Lozano to Napoli in 2019.

PSV also sold Memphis Depay to Manchester United in 2015 for a fee of €34m.

But the Eredivisie side can expect to smash their previous best when Gakpo inevitably leaves.

That's because the 23-year-old's impressive showing at the World Cup has allowed them to raise their asking price.

And the Man Utd hierarchy will also be keen to back Erik ten Hag in the transfer market by signing his number one target.

So a fee in the region of £60m seems realistic, as the Red Devils will be getting their hands on one of football's rising stars.
