Mbappe sent out a post on Instagram in the aftermath of PSG’s 1-0 Champions League last-16 defeat to Bayern Munich in Paris.

The attacker returned from injury to come on as a second half substitute at the Parc des Princes.

Mbappe used an image from the game with the caption: “Tout reste à faire…”

This should translate into English as: “Everything still to do”.

However, a glitch in Instagram’s translation tool, spelled it out as: “All that remains to be done…Manchester United’s team is now on @psg.”

The somewhat confusing translation led to many Man Utd fans believing that Mbappe was making a cryptic reference to a summer transfer to Old Trafford.

Mbappe has been linked with a big money transfer to United at the end of the season, with the emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani, expected to make a bid for the club imminently.

Mbappe to Real Madrid talks in 2022

Mbappe had seemed destined to join Real Madrid last summer but completed a dramatic turnaround by penning a three-year extension with PSG at the end of May.

Throughout 2021-22, it had been unanimously accepted that he would sign for Madrid on a Bosman transfer when his previous PSG contract expired.

Having rejected a €200 million bid from Real Madrid for Mbappe last summer, the Frenchman was believed to have already agreed a free transfer move to the club he supported as a child.

This was reinforced by the fact that he rejected numerous offers of a PSG extension throughout the campaign.

But, in a shock twist, Mbappe decided to sign a new deal at PSG.

It was thought that the new deal at PSG ran until 2025 but there are reports that it actually expires in 2024.

Only Mbappe himself – and not PSG – would have the option of extending the deal by a further year.

This certainly gives Madrid - or other teams like Man Utd - more chances of signing Mbappe this year or next.

Madrid are still considered the favourites to sign Mbappe when he leaves PSG.
