Why Mason Mount’s Chelsea contract talks have stalled
Mason Mount’s future at Chelsea is in doubt after talks over a new contract stalled, with both sides still unable to come to an agreement over an extension.
The 24-year-old is into the final 18 months of his contract and The Telegraph reports that some Chelsea figures are resigned to Mount not extending his deal, with both parties some way apart in their demands.
Mount is reportedly looking to become one of the highest earners at the club but Chelsea are allegedly offering the England international less than they have paid their recent signings.
DECLINE: Mason Mount's poor form this season
Chelsea are hoping for Mount to follow the trend of fellow academy graduates Reece James and Armando Broja, who signed long-term extensions this season, but optimism is fading over a new deal.
Mount paying the price for poor form
Raheem Sterling is believed to be the club’s highest earner on more than £300,000 a week and Mount is believed to want a salary in competition with his England teammate, however Chelsea are not keen on offering that kind of money.
Both parties are looking to come to an agreement, with Mount still hoping to stay at the club but the hesitation has allowed teams such as Liverpool to make their approach, with Jurgen Klopp’s side reportedly already in talks with the midfielder’s representatives.
MASTERSTROKE?: Why Chelsea could sell Mount to Liverpool
Chelsea will likely continue to play hardball instead of wanting to sell a homegrown talent to a divisional rival and the club have insisted they want to keep hold of their best players, meaning a compromise could eventually be reached.
However, Mount’s poor form this season has seen him drop out of the Chelsea starting line-up, particularly with the arrivals of players such as Mykhailo Mudryk, Noni Madueke and Enzo Fernandez.
A decision will likely be made in the summer on Mount’s future, with Chelsea set to continue their lavish spending, meaning he could be moved on if an appropriate bid is received.
