The talks were not official but Chelsea have begun preparations to appointing a new manager should Potter be unable to turn things around very soon.
Potter is at risk of the sack after yet another negative result on Sunday.
Chelsea lost 2-0 to Tottenham in north London, with Oliver Skipp and Harry Kane scoring the goals for the home team.
Potter has won just one of his last 11 games in all competitions, and two of the last 16 - losing 10 of these games.
Chelsea find themselves down in tenth position in the Premier League, 14 points off Champions League qualification.
Chelsea’s next two games are at home to Leeds in the Premier League and then the second leg of the Champions League last 16 against Borussia Dortmund.
The feeling is that if these two results are negative for Potter, then it could be the end of his time at Stamford Bridge.
Pochettino favourite to replace Potter
Pochettino is regarded as the favourite to succeed the former Brighton manager with the bookmakers.
He has been out of work since being sacked by PSG in 2022 and is available at odds of 7/4 with Sky Bet.
Other managers who have been linked with replacing Potter include Zinedine Zidane, Luis Enrique, Diego Simeone and Jose Mourinho.
