Man Utd £50m Ivan Toney transfer 'in jeopardy' for Brentford

Brentford had planned to cash in on Ivan Toney next summer to the tune of £50 million, but the Manchester United and Newcastle transfer target's value is now set to dwindle.

Toney has lit up the Premier League this season with his 14 goals for Brentford making him the second-highest scoring Englishman after Harry Kane, and the big clubs have inevitably been swirling.

Toney has two years left on his existing deal from the summer, and the Bees were reportedly resigned to cashing in on a player they paid Peterborough just £10m for three years ago.

Now valued at €36.5m (£32.3m) by FootballTransfers' in-house algorithm, Brentford were hopeful of squeezing more out of Man Utd and Newcastle with both teams short of a goalscoring No.9.

However, his recent admission about gambling on games is set to have a ripple effect.

"Toney's admission of guilt to many of the FA's 262 charges of breaching gambling regulations has jeopardised [Brentford's] strategy, however, as he is facing a lengthy ban which could rule him out for much of next season," report the Daily Mail.

Toney could face up to six months on the sidelines, although the FA's punishment is yet to be meted out and Toney has hit out at media speculation before he has even had his hearing.

If that prediction is accurate and depending on when the ban is implemented, Toney could miss that start of next season with a potential new employer. If he moved in a subsequent window, his value would only go down.

Toney is yet to agree terms on the £20,000-a-week deal he signed in 2020.

"We share Ivan's disappointment with leaks in a confidential case and the timing of them just before this international break," said Brentford manager Thomas Frank. "The talk of a potential ban is disappointing."
