Chelsea fans were bemoaning their luck as Real Madrid ran riot on the Premier League outfit.

The Blues were playing Los Blancos at the Santiago Bernabeu - with Marc Cucurella panned for his abject display and poor defending.

Meanwhile, Ben Chilwell was given a straight red, in what was a night to forget for Frank Lampard’s men.

Before the game, co-owner Todd Boehly predicted a 3-0 win, but what happened instead was another embarrassing display from the west London side.

So much so that even their fans started to vent their frustration at some of the players, with Chilwell and Cucurella being particular targets.

Cucurella panned

Cucurella was bought by Chelsea from Brighton last summer, but the move has failed to live up to expectations so far.

The Spaniard was close to joining Manchester City at one point before the Blues moved in and snapped the defender up.

The player is just one of many new faces that Chelsea have brought in under the new Boehly regime.

Things were more positive ahead of the game. Lampard said:“I think you can only become a leader in action. There is no point in being called a leader until you do it on the pitch. We have a lot of players who have a lot of titles so we can’t call ourselves completely young. Games like tomorrow are a great chance to perform and show personality.

“It’s normal in a season where a club like us falls below the levels we want, the character gets questioned. The only thing the players can do is prove it on the pitch. People can view it where they can see it. You can talk as much as you want but the players have to show it on the pitch.

“I’m absolutely not questioning the fact they have a lot of character because I’ve seen the dressing room and understand football. There is character. Nobody wants to not win football matches. But sometimes players can take a hit on confidence and sometimes a lack of confidence can look like a lack of character.”
