Ruben Amorim, the Sporting CP boss, is under consideration for the role, reports Football Insider.

The 38-year-old was interviewed by Chelsea last year before the Blues turned their attention to Potter - and he highly impressed during the proceedings.

Chelsea have also sounded out candidates such as ex-Bayern Munich boss Julian Nagelsmann, who is the first choice to take over, though the German wishes to wait until the end of the season before making a decision.

Chelsea are hoping to secure an appointment as soon as possible, but are also open to allowing a new manager to take over in the summer on a pre-agreement ahead of the new campaign.

Amorim led Benfica to a win over Arsenal in the Europa League this season, with the club winning on penalties after a 3-3 draw on aggregate.

Elsewhere for Chelsea, Mauricio Pochettino and former Barcelona head coach Luis Enrique has been identified as possible targets for the Blues.

Potter's future

It comes after the news that Potter, who was sacked earlier this week following a 2-0 loss to Aston Villa, has opted not to pursue a new club immediately, despite an open opportunity at Leicester City.

The English coach defected from Brighton last year and signed a five-year contract at Stamford Bridge to take over Thomas Tuchel, but the club continued their poor form.

His dismissal from Chelsea came the same day as the Foxes parted ways with Brendan Rodgers.

Leicester are thought to be long-term admirers of Potter but if he was to go there, it would have to be at the end of the season.

The position at Tottenham remains vacant after Antonio Conte left the side. It remains to be seen when they decide to fill the position, with them still in contention for a Champions League spot.
