Manchester United great Gary Neville has claimed there are four positions where the club must strengthen this summer.

Under Erik ten Hag, the Red Devils have enjoyed something of a resurgence and should see out the campaign in the top four, but while the Old Trafford men have improved, they are still from a side that looks capable of challenging for the title.

Man Utd have suffered some notable setbacks over the campaign, with a 7-0 defeat against Liverpool a particularly stinging reminder that they are far from their previous strength. On top of this, they were eliminated from the Europa League in a limp manner as they were defeated 3-0 away to Sevilla, going out of the tie 5-2 on aggregate having been 2-0 up.

The match in midweek made it particularly evident that when they suffer from injury problems, they are prone to struggle because of a lack of depth in certain areas and Neville believes that there are four positions that Ten Hag and his recruitment team must absolutely prioritise during the summer transfer window.

When he was asked the question on Twitter as to where United must strengthen, he replied: “Goalkeeper, centre-back, centre-forward and right-back.”

Man Utd’s summer plans

Just how easy it will be for Ten Hag to recruit remains to be seen. The takeover process at the club means there is uncertainty over just how much money there will be to spend, although FootballTransfers’ understanding of the situation is that only the deals at the blockbuster end of the market – those of €90 million or above – could be affected.

Certainly, United are chasing a centre-forward, with names like Victor Osimhen (Napoli) and Harry Kane (Tottenham) in the frame as they seek a permanent successor to Cristiano Ronaldo in attack.

Of Neville’s priority areas, the one least likely to be addressed is goalkeeper, with David de Gea believed to be on the verge of signing a new contract. His performance in Sevilla, though, has raised questions over the wisdom in that.
