‘One of the worst signings in Premier League history’ – Chelsea star savaged on Lampard’s return
Chelsea’s dreadful season continued on Saturday as they were defeated 1-0 by Wolves, proving that simply sacking Graham Potter will not magically solve their problems.
Interim manager Frank Lampard’s first match back in charge of the Stamford Bridge side ended in a narrow defeat due to a Matheus Nunes goal, and while the Blues were again impotent in attack, it was one of their defensive players who found himself in the eye of the storm after the Molineux fixture.
Marc Cucurella, signed for €65 million from Brighton in the summer, featured as a left-back in the Black Country, surprisingly starting ahead of Ben Chilwell in the role. Replaced in the second half, Chelsea fans took to Twitter to express their disappointment with the Spaniard, who failed to close down Nunes for the goal.
At the club less than a year, he is already being written off as a transfer flop, despite the fact that he is the most expensive left-back in history.
Cucurella might be one of the worst signings in PL history.
- World-record fee
- Huge wages
- Not a better CB than Colwill (academy)
- Not a better LB than Maatsen (academy)
If it sounds extreme, it's because the fanbase doesn't want to accept the gravity of failure yet.— ExpectedChelsea (@ExpectedChelsea) April 8, 2023
From a club that signed Romelu Lukaku for £97m, Marc Cucurella being their worst ever signing takes some doing.

Cucurella is genuinely the worst left back in the league attacking wise

Cucurella has been horrendous at defending this season, been getting destroyed down that side already before the goal and then he just doesn’t decide to close down Nunes.

I will be so disappointed if Havertz, Cucurella, Gallagher, Kepa and Koulibaly are here next season.

If he was right-footed, I don’t think Cucurella would’ve made it professionally

If Cucurella is still here next season while Maatsen plays for not Chelsea, it is frankly impossible for the manager/ownership/anyone involved with the club to maintain even a shred of credibility in my eyes

Chelsea's summer transfer plans:
- Sell Marc Cucurella— At The Bridge Pod ⭐️⭐️ (@AtTheBridgePod) April 8, 2023
When critiquing this game - why would you focus on the tactics/manager over the players?
Cucurella can't play left back to a high level when we signed him for 62m? Kovacic cant win balls in midfield despite being a midfielder? Havertz can't control a football?— Sahil (@SahilB_11) April 8, 2023
Worryingly for Chelsea, Cucurella is under contract until 2028, which is sure to complicate their prospects of offloading him in the summer given his sizeable wages.
