Manchester United could have a free run at one of their failed transfer targets from last summer, with Jurrien Timber expected to leave Ajax this summer.

Erik ten Hag had attempted to bring the 21-year-old with him to Old Trafford last summer when he was appointed manager, however Timber was convinced to stay with Ajax for another season.

The defender had concerns over whether a move to United would impact his chances to get into the Netherlands squad for the 2022 World Cup, a feat he eventually achieved, playing every minute for his country in Qatar.

Timber has continued to be an integral part of Ajax’s team in the meantime, playing more minutes than any other player, but he recently admitted a departure was getting ‘closer and closer’.

However, despite Timber’s claims, Sky Sport Germany reporter Florian Plettenburg has stated that there are no concrete offers for the Dutchman yet, although United and Liverpool are expected to be in the race to sign him this summer.

Ajax are believed to have placed a €50 million pricetag on Timber, having convinced him to extend his contract until 2025 in order to protect his value for a sale.

What does the future hold for Timber?

United’s top priority this summer will be a striker, however they are also expected to strengthen in defence, with the likes of Harry Maguire, Eric Bailly and Alex Telles being allowed to leave.

Timber has featured at centre-back for Ajax this season but he is capable of playing at right-back too, with his versatility believed to be a key selling point for Ten Hag, with the futures of Diogo Dalot and Aaron Wan-Bissaka still up in the air.

While United are likely to be frontrunners to sign Timber if they make a move, the defender’s girlfriend was recently spotted house hunting in Liverpool, fuelling speculation over a move to Anfield.

Jurgen Klopp is also keen to strengthen in defence, however Liverpool will also be prioritising other positions, with their midfield in desperate need of rejuvenation, meaning a transfer for Timber may be dependent on whether they or United can raise additional funds through sale before making a bid to Ajax.
