Billy Gilmour is a player who “would stroll into the Barcelona team” and Chelsea made a mistake in selling him, the Blues have been told after the Brighton midfielder turned in a masterclass in a 2-0 win over Georgia in Euro 2024 qualifying on Tuesday.

A match that will likely be best remembered for the torrential downpour prior to the game that caused a 90-minute delay in the game after Calum McGregor had put Scotland 1-0 up early on was light up by Gilmour, who gave a classy performance in the middle of the park.

Although Gilmour has never scored a professional goal, his first international start since 2022 was a roaring success as fans claimed that he is a player who could “stroll into the Barcelona team”.

Indeed, his sale for just £7m from Chelsea to Brighton last summer when his Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) easily topped £10m has only raised more questions over the transfer policy of the Stamford Bridge side.

Gilmour ‘underused and underrated’

Gilmour’s 2022/23 campaign was hampered as he was one of three Premier League stars plagued by influencer Orla Sloan, who dubbed herself ‘Devil Baby’, who pleaded guilty to charges of stalking involving fear of violence or serious alarm or distress against the Scotland international.
