Manchester United face a conundrum over the future of Amad Diallo this summer.

The 20-year-old Amad spent a successful period out on loan with Sunderland, where he played 43 matches and returned 14 goals and four assists, coming good in clutch moments at the end of the season as the Black Cats fell just short of promotion via the Championship playoffs.

Although the Ivory Coast international attacker showed enough potential to suggest he will make Man Utd’s squad, there are still lingering doubts over whether he will receive enough game time to justify staying at Old Trafford for the season ahead.

At present, the situation at Man Utd is further muddied by the takeover of the Old Trafford club, which has seen manager Erik ten Hag’s plans in the transfer market grind to an effective halt. Although United have a deal for Chelsea’s Mason Mount lined up, there is a fear that he could escape them, as Napoli centre-back Kim Min-jae appears to have, with Bayern Munich pouncing in that particular transfer battle.

Romano’s Amad Diallo transfer update

Fabrizio Romano has given an update on Man Utd’s current thinking with regard Amad, who is approaching a crucial point in his career.

Taking to Twitter, Romano told his followers: “Amad Diallo’s future is still open. Man United will make final decision on Amad in the next few weeks, he hopes for a first-team chance but it’s up to Erik ten Hag.”

Crucially, the transfer market specialist also lifted the lid on the former Atalanta youngster’s preferred destination should he move away on a temporary basis for a third time, having also had a six-month loan with Rangers in the Scottish Premiership.

“Understand in case Manchester United decide to loan Amad out, the player’s preference would be Sunderland again,” Romano said.

Amad’s future, therefore, seems tied to the success of Man Utd and Ten Hag bringing in their preferred transfer targets in the weeks ahead.
