Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is on the verge of ending his one-year association with Chelsea after agreeing a move to Ligue 1 giants Olympique Marseille.

The Gabonese striker joined Chelsea last summer, with the Blues spending €12 million to sign him from Barcelona - the club he’d joined on a free transfer from Arsenal just six months prior.

The signing was reportedly at the request of Thomas Tuchel, who had worked with Aubameyang at Borussia Dortmund, rather than Todd Boehly or the recruitment team.

Aubameyang, 34, joined Chelsea on Deadline Day on 1 September, and Tuchel, the man behind the transfer, was sacked just six days later. Aubameyang had featured only once under his former Dortmund boss.

Graham Potter’s reign began with Aubameyang as the Blues’ first-choice number nine, but the veteran soon lost his place to Kai Havertz and never recovered. In total, he made 21 appearances for the club, but was absent from the entire matchday squad (18) more times than he was included in the starting XI (11) last season.

He was favoured in the Champions League group stage - starting all six matches - but his tally of two goals and one assist during that time was not enough to convince Potter he deserved regular chances in the Premier League.

Furthermore, he was dropped from the club’s Champions League squad for the knockout stages, with January signings Enzo Fernandez, Mykhailo Mudryk and Joao Felix included instead.

The number behind Aubameyang’s torrid time at Chelsea

The Blues paid €12m to acquire his services from Barcelona, while his weekly wage was a reported €185,000 (£160,000).

If he does leave the club to join Marseille in July, Aubameyang would’ve spent 10 months at Stamford Bridge, accumulating a mouth-watering €8m salary during that time.

It means Chelsea will have spent €20m for one season of Aubameyang - transfer fee and salary combined - in which he made only 21 appearances.

The Gabon international netted just three times for Chelsea, which equates to €6.66m per goal scored.

Furthermore, Chelsea spent just over €20,000 per minute Aubameyang was on the pitch last season and slightly more than €1.8m per start.
