Donny van de Beek's time at Manchester United is coming to an end, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The Dutchman has never managed to come to grips with life at Old Trafford. Having played so brilliantly for Ajax, particularly in the Champions League, the midfielder arrived at United in 2020 to plenty of fanfare and for just €39 million, a bargain according to his Estimated Transfer Value (ETV), which sat at €55m at the time.

Yet the hype soon dissipated. Fitness issues and coaching instability saw him failing to adjust to English football and a loan move to Everton didn't do much to improve his fortunes. When Erik ten Hag arrived in Manchester, the expectation was that the ex-Ajax boss would help his former prodigy to recapture his form, but that failed to materialise, too.

An ailment saw him miss a good chunk of the opening months of last season and a serious knee injury ended his campaign prematurely in January. In June, Fabrizio Romano revealed that the 26-year-old would weigh up the possibility of leaving United, and the Italian has now given an update on Van de Beek's deliberations.

What did Romano say?

According to the transfer expert, the Dutchman has made the decision to look for a fresh employer. "More on Donny van de Beek," Romano announced to his 16.6 million Twitter followers, "he’s now exploring options to find [a] new club this summer, as expected."

In the same breath, he shot down rumours linking the midfielder to the Italian capital. "No contacts are taking place with AS Roma, as things stand. No negotiations despite reports," Romano wrote.

EXCLUSIVE: Ten Hag makes Amrabat midfield priority

It remains to be seen what the future will hold for Donny van de Beek, but the last few years have severely damaged the reputation of a player who was once one of Europe's most sought-after midfielders.
