Harry Maguire is refusing to leave Manchester United this summer unless they give him a massive payoff.

That is according to FootballInsider, who report that Maguire is demanding a £20 million payoff in order to accept a transfer away from the club.

Man Utd have put Maguire up for sale this summer but are struggling to find any concrete interest in the England international.

A key reason for this is Maguire’s salary. He earns £10m per season and he is not willing to take a pay cut at his new club.

He has told Man Utd that he will only accept a move away if they pay him the remaining two years of his contract in full.

That amounts to £20m in total, something United are not prepared to.

FootballInsider adds that Maguire would happily sit on the bench for two years if United don’t meet his demands.

United recently slashed their asking price for Maguire by €15 million in an attempt to sell the England defender.

According to GiveMeSport, United have reduced their asking price to €41m.

A further sign that United want Maguire out of the club was the news on Sunday that they had stripped the defender of the club's captaincy.

Both Tottenham and West Ham are interested in Maguire and United hope that the lower asking price will invite offers. Chelsea have also been linked with a shock move since the injury of Wesley Fofana.

Maguire for sale at Man Utd

Maguire has endured two miserable past seasons for Man Utd.

After an error-prone 2021-22 season, he lost his place in the first team during the past campaign as Erik Ten Hag preferred Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez as his centre back pairing.

When Maguire has played he has often struggled, including two huge errors in the Europa League quarter-final defeat to Sevilla.

Maguire dropped to fifth choice in the centre back pecking order at United, with left-back Luke Shaw even preferred to him recently in the absence of Martinez and Varane.

Maguire joined Man Utd from Leicester in a world record deal for a defender in 2019.

He has made 175 appearances and scored seven goals.
