Manchester United stand to be the biggest losers from Kylian Mbappe’s insistence to leave PSG this summer.

Events in Paris may seem distant to those at Old Trafford at present, but the domino effect of Mbappe’s fallout at Parc des Princes promises to be a substantial one. The striker has been left out of the club's European tour and will be put on the transfer list.

None of the consequences of this falls in the favour of Erik ten Hag’s men, who are scrambling to restore their status as one of the dominant forces of European football.

PSG open Hojlund transfer talks

The first consequence is a very direct one. Man Utd have made Rasmus Hojlund their primary transfer target this summer but the Atalanta striker has also fallen under the gaze of PSG. According to L’Equipe, talks have already been opened with the Dane over a move to the French capital – and these will surely step up should Mbappe stand his ground.

Atalanta have made it clear they want a quick resolution in the Hojlund case, setting a €60 million asking price for the forward. PSG believe they can raise this sum.

United, meanwhile, continue to be caught in their takeover limbo, which has denied Erik ten Hag the resources required to sign the players he wishes.

Indeed, in normal circumstances, a powerhouse like Man Utd would surely be one of the frontrunners for a talent like Mbappe, not least because they need offensive reinforcements. He would be perfect for them.

Given the ownership uncertainty, which is what many of the club’s problems currently boil down to, it seems highly improbable that the Glazers will launch a bid for a player who will cost easily in excess of €100 million.

That’s the second reason why the timing of this announcement could not be any worse for Man Utd.

Finally, Mbappe could strengthen one of their direct rivals, whether that’s domestically or in Europe. On the market this summer, the prospect of a move to Real Madrid diminishes, leaving only Premier League clubs as realistic suitors. Could Arsenal, Liverpool, Man City or even Chelsea profit?

If the 24-year-old were to move to one of their rivals, clearly this is another major setback.

Man Utd should be at the front of the queue for Mbappe, but the Glazers’ takeover dallying may just cost them a player who could have a transformative effect on their fortunes.
