The Blues have been trying to sign Caicedo all summer but are still some way away from agreeing a transfer fee with Brighton.

And Chelsea made a big mistake in improving their chances of signing Caicedo whilst negotiating the purchase of goalkeeper Robert Sanchez.

Goalkeeper Sanchez has joined Chelsea this weekend for a fee of £25 million (€29m).

Gianluca Di Marzio has explained how Brighton were willing to reduce their asking price for Sanchez from their initial demands of £30m down to £25m.

But while Chelsea have saved £5m on Sanchez, Chelsea’s refusal to pay that extra £5m may now be used against them during the Caicedo negotiations.

Brighton will point out that they were willing to compromise over Sanchez, and that Chelsea should now do the same with Caicedo.

Chelsea have had two bids rejected by Brighton for Caicedo, and recently had an €82 million offer turned down.

It is widely reported that Brighton are demanding €116m (£100m) for Caicedo, as they value him at a similar price to the record transfer fee Arsenal paid for West Ham’s Declan Rice.

Caicedo is desperate to join the Blues but given the huge gap between Chelsea’s offer and Brighton’s request, there have been reports Chelsea could move on to other targets. Leeds’ Tyler Adams is the most recent alternative that has been mentioned.

The 21-year-old Caicedo has developed into one of the best central midfielders in the Premier League over the past 18 months and helped Brighton qualify for Europe for the first time.
