Manchester United are finally making progress with their outgoings after advancing in talks with Ipswich Town over a loan deal for forgotten defender Brandon Williams.

Williams played just four minutes of football last season and has been told he is not part of Erik ten Hag’s plans this season, with numerous players ahead of him at both right and left back.

United have been keen to sell Williams permanently but interest has not been forthcoming so far, prompting a deal to be negotiated with Ipswich.

The Championship side are managed by former United coach Kieran McKenna, who sit top of the division after wins in their opening three games, having achieved automatic promotion from League One in his first full season in charge.

The 22-year-old is entering the final year of his contract at Old Trafford, although United have the option to extend for a further season – something which they will consider doing, having inserted an option to buy in the loan.

Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano has stated that discussions are ongoing to send Williams to Portman Road, with the ex-Norwich loanee expecting to have found a new club by the end of the window.

What are United’s plans for the rest of the transfer window?

United are still determined to sign a central midfielder before the month’s end – a need which has become even more pressing after Mason Mount was ruled out for four-to-six weeks with a hamstring injury.

Sofyan Amrabat was a top target for Ten Hag but talks with Fiorentina stalled after United were unable to meet their asking price in excess of €30m, with sales needed before any progress could be made.

As such, Williams’ departure would be a welcome one for United and he could soon be joined out the door by Eric Bailly and Donny van de Beek, although Harry Maguire is on course to remain at Old Trafford this season.

Ten Hag has also considered adding a backup goalkeeper to replace Dean Henderson, who is in talks with Crystal Palace, and United have run medical checks over Fenerbache’s Altay Bayindir ahead of a €5m move.
