Aston Villa have made enquiries with Manchester United over Harry Maguire following the serious injury sustained by Tyrone Mings, FootballTransfers has learned.

Mings suffered what appeared to be a bad knee injury during Aston Villa’s 5-1 defeat to Newcastle United on the opening day of the Premier League season at St James’ Park.

The England international will undergo a scan on Sunday to understand the severity of the injury but there are fears of an ACL tear.

If Mings is confirmed to be out until at least the New Year, Villa plan to sign another central defender before the end of the transfer window.

As a result, Villa have made enquiries to Man Utd about Maguire. The talks are at an early stage and they wouldn’t place a bid until they know the prognosis of Mings.

However, Villa have told United that they would be prepared to match and beat any other offers for Maguire should they make an offer.

Maguire is available for sale at Man Utd, having fallen well down the pecking order at Old Trafford.

West Ham had a £30 million offer for Maguire accepted on Thursday.

Maguire has still not agreed personal terms with the Hammers, sparking reports that he could indeed stay and fight for his place under Erik ten Hag.

FootballTransfers understands that West Ham are still Maguire’s preferred destination this summer.

Maguire put up for sale by Man Utd

Maguire lost his place in the Man Utd starting XI last season and has had two miserable years for his club.

Indeed, the ex- Leicester man even dropped to fifth choice in the centre back pecking order at United in the final months of last season, behind Lisandro Martinez, Raphael Varane, Victor Lindelof and even left-back Luke Shaw in a converted role.

The 30-year-old is still expected to leave this summer in order to ensure he keeps his England place for Euro 2024.

Maguire joined Man Utd from Leicester in a world record deal for a defender in 2019.

He has made 175 appearances and scored seven goals.
