Manchester United have stepped up their chase for a new left-back after making a formal bid for Barcelona’s Marcos Alonso and being given the go-ahead to pursue other options.

Erik ten Hag has focused his attention on the left-side of defence after seeing Luke Shaw pick up an injury that could rule him out for at least six weeks, while backup option Tyrell Malacia is also sidelined for a notable period.

Diogo Dalot filled in during United’s 3-2 win over Nottingham Forest but the crisis has left Ten Hag short-staffed, with youngster Alvaro Fernandez the only other option available to him.

MAN UTD TRANSFER NEWS: The latest news from Old Trafford ahead of deadline day

It has led to pursuit of a midfielder seemingly put on hold until a left-back is brought in and transfer guru Fabrizio Romano told The United Stand that approaches for Marc Cucurella of Chelsea and Tottenham’s Sergio Reguilon have been approved by the club.

Alonso, meanwhile, is reported by Spanish outlet SPORT to have been the subject of a loan bid by United, although the player has previously been cited as having ‘no intention’ of leaving Barca this summer.

United are still hoping to conduct a number of deals before Friday’s transfer deadline, both incomings and outgoings, as Ten Hag looks to round off his squad for the new season.

What are United’s plans for the rest of the window?

Goalkeeper Altay Bayindir is set to arrive in a £4 million deal from Fenerbahce to replace Dean Henderson, who has agreed a £15m move to Crystal Palace.

Sofyan Amrabat remains a top target for Ten Hag and a move will likely be pursued close to the deadline, with Fiorentina now reportedly willing to consider loan deals as well as lowering their asking price.

United have struggled to continue adding to their squad since Rasmus Hojlund’s arrival at the start of August, which took Ten Hag’s total outlay this summer to more than £180m.

Any further incomings will likely depend on outgoings, with Donny van de Beek and Eric Bailly still likely to leave, while Harry Maguire’s previously failed transfer to West Ham could be revived before the end of the month.
