According to Ben Jacobs, Chelsea could use the occasion of their opening Premier League match of the campaign to finally present the Ecuador midfielder.

As per multiple sources, Chelsea will sign the Brightonstar for a British record fee of €133 million (£115m) - with the transfer set to become official imminently.

This comes after a truly chaotic few days involving Chelsea and Liverpool battling for the signature of Caicedo.

Liverpool had appeared to have hijacked Chelsea’s move for the player as they had a €127m bid accepted by Brighton.

However, Caicedo then refused to move to Liverpool as he insisted he only wanted to join the Blues.

Other media sources insist that Liverpool remain the only club to have actually had an offer accepted by Brighton for Caicedo.

But it is widely believed that Caicedo will eventually join Chelsea. Whether that will arrive in time for him to be presented at Stamford Bridge on Sunday, ironically in a match between the two teams in question, remains to be seen.

Caicedo is set to sign an eight-year contract at Stamford Bridge, with the option of a further year, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Caicedo’s proposed move to Chelsea has been one of the longest-running sagas of the summer.

Chelsea had two bids rejected by Brighton for Caicedo, and most recently had a €95m (£82m) offer turned down.

Brighton have been demanding a fee that at least matches the price Arsenal paid for West Ham’s Declan Rice. That fee will now be superseded by Chelsea’s offer.

Caicedo is desperate to join the Blues and has become increasingly frustrated at the delays in making the move.

The 21-year-old has developed into one of the best central midfielders in the Premier League over the past 18 months and helped Brighton qualify for Europe for the first time last season.

He also impressed for Ecuador at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, although his nation were eliminated in the group stages.
