Celebrity Arsenal fan Piers Morgan has urged Mikel Arteta to sign Ivan Toney during the January window and believes the Gunners won’t win the Premier League title without a “proper striker.”

Toney, 27, is currently serving a football ban after he pled guilty to over 200 betting breaches earlier this year.

The Brentford forward will be able to return to competitive action in mid-January, and transfer interest in his services is beginning to ramp up as England’s biggest clubs prepare to submit offers during the winter window.

In fact, rumours suggest that Toney may have already played his last game for Brentford, with many expecting him to depart the club before featuring again.

Chelsea, Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United are all interested in Toney - as exclusively reported by FootballTransfers - while Arsenal are also keen on landing the Englishman.

The Gunners have used both Eddie Nketiah and Gabriel Jesus as their starting number nine this season, but Morgan believes that signing Toney is a must in January.

What has Piers Morgan said?

Morgan told TalkSPORT: I think that in January we [Arsenal] have to go and get Ivan Toney or someone like him because we need a proper striker.

“Every Arsenal fan knows this and I think we’ve been kidding ourselves for too long that we can exist without one and the truth is that we can’t.”

When questioned how Arteta would be able to afford the Brentford man, Morgan replied: “We could sell Kai Havertz and get our £70 million back!

“People ask me what I would have done and what I’d have done is gone to Napoli and given £150m for Osimhen and everyone goes ‘that’s nuts’, but we just spent nearly half of that on Havertz who looks like he isn’t anywhere near the standard we need to win the league.

“The thinking, to me, is very small-time thinking. We went and got Declan Rice, brilliant. We have some great players in that team like Saliba was purring again yesterday, Odegaard when he’s on form is fantastic and we’ve really missed Martinelli.

“We’ve got a lot of great players, but if you don’t have a proper striker then you’re not going to win the league.

“I’m sorry, because Arsenal fans may not want to hear this but it’s the reality, but if we’re serious we’ve got to go out in January and get on.”

Toney scored 20 Premier League goals in 33 games for Brentford last season and Fabrizio Romano has reported that Thomas Frank’s side will demand around €60m for his services in January.
