Manchester City reportedly submitted a €70 million offer for Crystal Palace star Eberechi Eze on Deadline Day, but that bid was not actually lodged, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Eze, 25, is a player admired by Pep Guardiola and the Man City hierarchy, but the club decided to sign Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder Matheus Nunes instead.

The Portugal international has signed a five-year deal at the Etihad Stadium after City agreed a €62m deal with Wolves on Deadline Day.

Furthermore, Man City also sold Cole Palmer to Chelsea on the same day, something that was intended to free up space to sign Eze, as per the Daily Mail.

They have reported that City submitted a €70m bid for Eze on the final day of the transfer window, but this was not enough to convince Palace to sell their star man.

However, Fabrizio Romano has rebuked this claim, posting on Twitter: “Manchester City didn’t send any official proposal for Eberechi Eze on Deadline Day. Despite rumours on £60m (€70m) last minute proposal, City considered Eze as they appreciate him - but before signing Matheus Nunes. No bid on Deadline, as he was 100% untouchable for Crystal Palace.”

Eze currently has two years left on his Crystal Palace contract, which is due to expire in 2025. He scored his first Premier League goal of the 2023-24 season in the Eagles’ 3-2 win over Wolves two days after the transfer window shut.

Man City’s summer business

Josko Gvardiol, Jeremy Doku, Mateo Kovacic and Nunes were City’s four summer signings, with Guardiola’s side spending a total of €241.1m on new arrivals.

They did, however, sell Palmer, Riyad Mahrez, Aymeric Laporte and several talented academy prospects, including James Trafford, Carlos Borges and Shea Charles.

Man City are top of the Premier League table with 12 points from their opening four games. They are the only team with a 100% record in England’s top flight.
