Former Celtic and Norwich striker Chris Sutton has backed Darwin Nunez to become a Liverpool hero despite the criticism he faced last season.

The Uruguayan has been at Anfield for over a year now and it is fair to say that it hasn't been an easy time for him. Though he scored 15 goals in all competitions last term, Nunez was frequently criticised for missing easy chances.

Often compared to the record-breaking Erling Haaland prior to that season, Nunez was left in the dust by the Norwegian machine in terms of goalscoring. Moreover, Liverpool endured a tough campaign which won't have helped Nunez to settle in after his €80 million move from Benfica.

This season, the good times seem to be returning to Anfield even though Liverpool still like to make things hard for themselves. With four goals so far, Nunez is currently finding the net every other game and Chris Sutton believes that he will 'comfortably' score 20 this season.

What did Sutton say?

Speaking on the It's All Coming Up podcast, Sutton gave his thoughts on the 24-year-old. "They had that game in the Community Shield [last season] where Nunez scored and Haaland didn’t, then there was this head-to-head," Sutton said.

"I think Nunez took a fair bit of flak during the season because of that comparison. He is clearly his own man and is a massive threat."

"Of course, it matters if you miss chances, especially big chances, but he is one of those players where he does seem to dust it off and get on with it. You have to have that strong mentality."

"Maybe it [hesitation] is something Nunez is suffering from a little bit, but the fact we still talk about him missing opportunities shows he is still getting in the right positions. He got 15 goals last season in all competitions, I think he will get 20 this season comfortably."
