Manchester United have been told they have signed “the right goalkeeper at the wrong time” with Andre Onana.

The Cameroon international has come in for criticism since replacing David de Gea in the summer, with his transfer from Inter Milan rushed through in response to the Spaniard surprisingly leaving the club after he failed to agree a contract.

Onana has been guilty of several high-profile shot-stopping errors, having been brought in for his abilities with the ball at his feet.

Onana looks good on the surface – Foster

According to former Man Utd goalkeeper Ben Foster, who was speaking to the United Stand, that makes little sense.

“It is a case of fur coat no knickers,” he said of Onana. “There are so many different types of goalkeeper. The way goalkeeping is evolving, it’s almost like teams don’t even want a shot-stopper now, they just look at are you good with the ball at his feet.

“It looks good on the surface. But then you look at the rest of it: there’s no one who can take the ball off of him. It looks fantastic but they don’t have the parts. They can’t work as part of a machine.

“I can’t wait until Man Utd play City away at the Etihad and Man City are pressing from the very front, they won’t be letting Onana have the ball 40 yards from his goal. I want to see how he does.

“I want to see how the manager sets the team up. Does he just tell them to go out and keep doing what they’re doing? If they do that, oh my God. They’re going to have to play a completely different style of football.

“He doesn’t suit them at this time. He’d be decent at Man City but he’s not as good as Ederson so he’s not getting into a team like that. It’s the right goalie at the wrong time.”

Onana has played seven times for Man Utd and has conceded 14 goals in these games.
