Aaron Wan-Bissaka is currently in talks with Manchester United regarding a contract extension at the club, according to Fabrizio Romano, nine months after he almost left Old Trafford.

The 25-year-old was on the verge of departing the club in the January transfer window, but he impressed Erik ten Hag during the World Cup break and has now started 12 of the past 15 Premier League games for the Red Devils.

In fact, Man Utd planned for Wan-Bissaka to leave at the start of this year, before he convinced Ten Hag to give him a consistent run in the side.

Romano revealed on his YouTube channel: “Man Utd in November and December were looking for a new right-back.

“Wan-Bissaka was expected to leave and a new right-back to come after Wan-Bissaka had a very difficult first part of the season.

“But he did very well in January and Man Utd decided to stay with him and [instead] invest money on [Wout] Weghorst and Marcel Sabitzer.

“But we have to add one thing – they had a right-back in their hands, ready to be signed in case Wan-Bissaka was going to leave.

“That player was Josip Juranovic. Croatian right-back playing now for Union Berlin but he was at Celtic [at the time].”

Juranovic had impressed in Scotland and during the 2022 World Cup, but despite much speculation regarding a move to Old Trafford, he joined Union Berlin for €8.6 million in January.

Wan-Bissaka contract extension

In addition to forcing his way into Ten Hag’s thinking, Wan-Bissaka is set to earn himself a fresh new deal at Man Utd.

“The conversations between Man Utd and Wan-Bissaka’s camp over a new deal are ongoing,” Romano admitted.

“The agreement over a new contract is not done yet, but the conversation is on. It’s a possibility for Man Utd and Wan-Bissaka to continue together and extend the contract.”

Wan-Bissaka’s current contract at Old Trafford is due to expire next summer, meaning a new deal must be agreed soon otherwise he will be free to negotiate with foreign teams from January onwards.
