Fabrizio Romano has given the state of play on the future of Manchester United flop Donny van de Beek.

After failing to sell Van de Beek before the end of the main English and European transfer window, United have been hoping to offload the Dutchman to Turkey.

The Turkish window closes on September 15 and there has been interest from the likes of Fenerbahce and Galatasaray.

However, Fabrizio Romano reports that it is unlikely that Van de Beek will be sold before the deadline on Friday and instead he will stay put until January.

What did Romano say about Van de Beek

“I think at the end there is a very good chance Donny stays until January, because Donny does not want to make a move to say I’ll be away for six, seven months and then I will return,” Romano told The United Stand. “This is not Donny’s style.

“If he wanted to go to Turkey he had some possibilities to go, but he wanted to play Champions League football, and now that is no longer possible because Champions League lists are already closed. So I think at the moment this Donny story with Turkey is not that concrete.

“It was a possibility a couple of weeks ago but the player was not so keen on that kind of move. I expect Donny to stay. Let’s see.”

The attacking midfielder knows that he will likely be sitting on the bench until January as he has not played a minute this season.

Van de Beek's Man Utd career

Van de Beek was a big-money signing in the summer of 2020 as Man United splashed out up to €45 million to buy him from Ajax.

However, the midfielder has proved to be a massive flop – scoring just two goals and making two assists in all competitions over the last three years.

He made just two Premier League starts last season – and seven appearances in all – and was on the pitch for only 164 minutes in total. He had no goal contributions.

He spent six months on loan at Everton in 2022 where he also disappointed.

At Ajax, Van de Beek emerged as one of the most promising young players in Europe as he played a pivotal role in the club reaching the semi-finals of the 2018-19 Champions League.

While at Ajax, he scored 41 goals in 175 appearances.
