Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Jadon Sancho came close to joining Chelsea from Manchester United late in the summer transfer window.

Sancho was left out of the Man Utd squad that suffered a 3-1 loss against Arsenal on Sunday, with manager Erik ten Hag stating after the match that the decision have been taken because he had not trained well during the week.

The 23-year-old attacker was quick to hit back, claiming that he has been made a “scapegoat” in the situation and that there is another reason for Ten Hag exiling him from the squad, though he did not indicate what this might be.

In any case, Sancho has been a disappointment at Man Utd signing joining from Borussia Dortmund for €85 million in July 2021.

Over the course of his two seasons at Old Trafford, he has managed only 12 goals and six assists, while he continues to be peripheral under Ten Hag, with the relationship apparently at breaking point after Sunday’s drama.

Indeed, it appears that the Dutchman has already tried to dump the out-of-form England international, who has made three appearances as a substitute this season.

Football transfer news expert Romano has confirmed rumours that arose late in the transfer window that Chelsea were seeking to complete a deal for the former Manchester City youth.

“Jadon Sancho came on the table when Chelsea and Manchester United discussed about Marc Cucurella in a possible swap deal. However, it was never concrete, close or advanced,” he explained on his YouTube channel.

What next for Sancho?

Tension has existed between Sancho and Ten Hag for months, with the winger left out of the Man Utd squad early in 2023 after it was implied that he was not working hard enough in training.

This latest episode is a clear escalating of problems between the two and could well end up with Sancho being frozen out of Ten Hag’s plans for an extended period and will inevitably lead to transfer speculation in January unless there is a dramatic U-turn.
