The striker joined La Liga outfit Getafe on loan, in what was a late deadline day transfer.

And the details around the move have emerged - with Romano reporting that Man Utd will pay more than 50% of the player’s wages.

The attacker has two years left on his deal at Old Trafford, earning him £75,000 a week, and Man Utd are expected the cover above 50% of this. When he returns to Man Utd in 2024, he will have just one year left on his contract.

Indeed, the Premier League side will still be footing a large percentage of the wage despite them stating that they would be eventually departing Greenwood from the club. There was reported interest from a number of sides across Europe and the Middle East, such as Roma and Al-Ettifaq.

It is thought that both Lazio and Besiktas were both hopeful of landing the striker, but he eventually left for Spain.

Lazio’s president blamed Man Utd for the failed transfer. Claudio Lotito, claimed that the player was keen on the move but Man Utd failed to complete the paperwork on time and so a deal failed. Greenwood was keen to move to the Italian capital but put some blame on United for not completing the paperwork in time. “I tried until the last minute,” Lotito told La Lazio Siamo Noi.

Getafe, who are currently 12th in the top flight, snapped up the Man Utd attacker in the dying embers of the transfer window, with his former club confirming: “Mason Greenwood has signed for La Liga side Getafe CF on a season-long loan, subject to international clearance. The move enables Greenwood to begin to rebuild his career away from Manchester United.

“The club will continue to offer its support to Mason and his family during this period of transition.”
