Hojlund’s ex-Atalanta teammate Joakim Maehle revealed that Atalanta coach Gasperini acted furiously to the two Denmark stars from driving together to training.

Like Hojlund, Maehle left Atalanta during the summer transfer window as he moved to Wolfsburg in the Bundesliga.

Maehle ended his time in Bergamo on bad terms with Gasperini and was heavily critical of the Italian manager, accusing him of being a control freak.

What did Maehle say about Gasperini and Hojlund?

“You don’t feel like a person [under Gasperini],” Maehle said.

“You feel like a number. You have no relationship with the coach. He would stand there and blame someone for something strange. For example, he was furious when Rasmus [Højlund] came to training by car together,” he revealed.

“He didn’t want us to drive together. Because then we could sit and talk together on the way to training, and enjoy ourselves. He didn’t want that, and I got scolded even if it had been agreed with the club because he [Hojlund] had no driver.

“I don’t know if it’s typical Italians, but some things make you angry and tired in the long run.”

Man Utd signed Hojlund this summer from Atalanta for €75 million plus €10m in add-ons.

Hojlund signed a five-year contract until 2028 worth €5m a year plus bonuses.

He made his debut for the Red Devils as a substitute in the 3-1 defeat to Arsenal at the Emirates.

Hojlund exploded in 2023 as one of the most exciting young talents in European football.

He scored 15 goals in the calendar year for club and country prior to his move to Man Utd.
