Manchester United defender Sergio Reguilon was rejected by Burnley before moving to Old Trafford, a report has suggested.

The Spaniard arrived on loan to the Red Devils during the summer window after he was told that he would struggle for game-time with Tottenham, who are enjoying their new lease of life under Ange Postecoglou.

The defender has not been named in their matchday squad for any of their opening Premier League fixtures this campaign.

Man Utd signed Reguilon on deadline day, with injuries currently sustained by Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia. Alvaro Fernandez went out to Granada on loan, too.

Reguilon has not featured in a Premier League match since April 2022, while he even had a poor loan spell at Atletico Madrid last season.

Burnley deny Reguilon move

Burnley chief operating officer Matt Williams admitted that the Clarets were offered the player just a few days before Man Utd snapped him up.

But they opted not to take the deal, the club executive has claimed. Williams told BBC Radio Lancashire: "Left-backs are a bit of a rarity. Look at Manchester United - one of the biggest clubs in world football. Luke Shaw goes down injured and they take a player from Tottenham we'd been offered three or four days earlier.

"It was a business decision that we didn't sign him [Reguilon] - salaries, loan fees etc."

Erik ten Hag was forced into the loan market after eating up a majority of the club’s funds on the likes of Mason Mount, Andre Onana, and Rasmus Hojlund. They managed to bring in the left-back and Sofyan Amrabat on loan ahead of the close of the summer window.

Burnley, meanwhile, struggled to find another defender after rejecting Reguilon - they were unable to bring Ian Maatsen to the club from Chelsea, with the player wanting to stay with his current outfit.
