Long-time Manchester United target Jeremie Frimpong has extended his Bayer Leverkusen contract.

The Dutchman has been repeatedly linked with a move to Old Trafford in recent months. Erik ten Hag is keen for his full-backs to get involved in the attack and there are very few wide defenders in Europe who can match his compatriot's offensive output.

Since his move to Leverkusen, Frimpong has established himself as one of the most attack-minded and exciting right-backs in the game, though questions about his defensive ability refuse to go away. Nevertheless, Ten Hag is said to be a long-time admirer of the 22-year-old, who has already racked up a goal and three assists in six Bundesliga outings for high-flying Leverkusen this term.

Last term, Frimpong recorded eight goals and seven assists, which naturally saw him linked with a move away. But no transfer materialised and the Dutchman is a vital cog in Xabi Alonso's new-look Werkself who are seeking to dethrone Bayern Munich for the first time in 11 years.

Frimpong's new deal

Despite no summer move happening, there have still been rumours that Man Utd will again approach the Bundesliga side for their right-back either in January or after the conclusion of the current season. That has just become much more difficult.

Leverkusen have announced that the Dutchman has extended his stay with the club until 2028. His previous deal ran until 2025. Prising him away from the Rhineland will therefore be extremely tough and pricey for Man Utd.

ANDRE ONANA: The warning signs that Man Utd missed at Inter Milan

"Jeremie Frimpong has not just developed into an extremely popular figure in our squad over the past few years," sporting director Simon Rolfes said, "at the moment, he is one of the best players in the Bundesliga in his position as an attacking right-back. The contract extension underlines Jeremie's importance to our Werkself.”
