Fabio Vieira could be on his way out of Arsenal in January.

Though a regular fixture off the bench for Mikel Arteta this season, the Portuguese midfielder has not managed to establish himself as a starter under the Spaniard despite at times showing immense promise. It was a similar story last season and it is becoming increasingly clear that his move to the Emirates was a mistake.

The 23-year-old has not started a Premier League fixture since a 1-0 away win over Everton all the way back in September and speculation about his future is beginning to ramp up. Indeed, it seems that a loan move could be just what is needed for him at this stage.

In recent times, French media has begun reporting that Vieira could be of interest to Ligue 1 clubs. Specifically, crisis club Olympique Marseille could offer a solution to his game time problem, if a report from La Tribune Olympienne is to be believed.

Vieira to leave in January?

Marseille, like their hated rivals Lyon, are experiencing a tumultuous season. Head coach Marcelino left after just a few weeks in charge and the Ligue 1 giants, now coached by Gennaro Gattuso, languish in 10th.

Moreover, club president Pablo Longoria was recently forced to shield ex-Arsenal man Pierre Emerick Aubameyang from scathing criticism in the press, but the side nevertheless appear to be a sensible destination for Vieira.

Indeed, Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that the Portuguese's future at the Emirates is in doubt, though he insists that it is too early to mention anything concrete at this stage.

“Marseille have been linked with an interest in signing Fabio Vieira on loan," Romano told CaughtOffside, "but it’s too early to say on this one. Arsenal have not decided anything yet on players to leave in January and also OM have still no director; it will be Mehdi Benatia, who is set to be announced this week, but it’s still early to negotiate for players.”
