€70m Liverpool star tipped for Real Madrid move
Dominik Szoboszlai has been tipped to join Real Madrid if he ever leaves Liverpool by Hungary legend Gyorgy Mezey.
Szoboszlai, 23, joined Liverpool for €70 million from RB Leipzig during the summer as the Bundesliga club saw a mass exodus of their best players.
Josko Gvardiol (€90m to Manchester City) and Christopher Nkunku (€60m to Chelsea) also left Leipzig, with the likes of Castello Lukeba, Xavi Simons (loan) and Lois Openda arriving as replacements.
Szoboszlai has enjoyed a brilliant start to life at Liverpool and while his tally of two goals and two assists in 18 appearances isn’t the most eye-catching, he has played a key role in Mohamed Salah’s impressive form and is indispensable for Jurgen Klopp as things stand.
The 23-year-old was part of a major midfield rebuild at Anfield during the summer, with the Hungarian one of four central midfielders to join the club.
Alexis Mac Allister, Ryan Gravenberch and Wataru Endo also signed for Liverpool in the most recent transfer window, while Fabinho, Jordan Henderson, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Naby Keita and James Milner all departed.
Mezey, who has coached the Hungary national team on two separate occasions, believes that Real Madrid is the next logical step for Szoboszlai if he opts to leave Liverpool.
What has been said?
Mezey told Hungarian outlet Index: “if Dominik were to leave Liverpool, I could only imagine him at Real Madrid. Where Ferenc Puskás was once the star. If Szoboszlai were to sign there, the circle would be closed.”
Puskas scored 201 goals in 231 Real Madrid games and is seen as one of Los Blancos’ greatest ever players following his eight-year spell at the club. He is also considered to be Hungary’s greatest ever footballer.
Szoboszlai’s current Liverpool contract runs until 2028, so a move to the Santiago Bernabeu appears unlikely as things stand, while Jude Bellingham’s presence means a transfer makes little sense as well.
However, if he continues his form at present, then Real Madrid may well come knocking in the future.
